Architectural Coffee Break
Studio Gross
Anne and Sebastian Gross are architects from Berlin, based in Tokyo. In addition to their work in practice and academia, they are active in film, illustration, and curators. Due to the increasing demand for their intercultural experience as Germans in Japan, they founded Studio GROSS in 2019. Their studio: a small corner store in a vacant post-war Machiya that, after renovation, gives space to live, work and to the public. Their vision is to offer an experimental space that allows actors to form thoughts on everyday life and architecture through exhibitions and events. Their work tackles a rising vacancy rate among Tokyo's single-family houses by offering alternatives through renovation. Simultaneously, Anne frames the studio's work with her research and the writings of Lucius Burckhardt - the founder of Strollology - as an alternative reading of landscape and urban space.
